COBRAS PRESENTATION NIGHT – BEST JUNIOR PLAYER IN FIRST YEAR PLAYING SENIORS

On Friday 15 March 2019, the Boroondara Cricket Club held its 2018/2019 Season Awards Evening at which the Junior Section teams received team awards (batting, bowling and coach’s awards) and four special awards were presented.

One such award was the Best Junior Player in First Year Playing Seniors for the 2018/19 season which is awarded to the best junior player playing in his first season of Senior cricket. The nominees for this award were Luca Van der Sluys and Obie Chambers.

The winner of the award for the Best Junior Player in First Year Playing Seniors for 2018/19 went to Obie Chambers.

Obie played in the 14As as a “bottom ager” and scored 135 runs at an average of 33.75. His finest knock was against Glen Iris in round 8 where, after a slowish start, he piled on the runs and ended on 54. In a team with plenty of bowlers, Obie’s leg spinners were used sparingly but he still returned the figures of 13 overs, 4 /51 at 25.5. Next season presents a great opportunity for Obie to dominate in the Cobras 14As!

Obie also had a great season in Seniors commencing with a fine knock of 57 in the first LOC 4 game of the season showing great composure and judgment opening the batting. He then continued in the 3rds for the rest of the season where he opened the batting and scored a total of 137 runs with a high score of 32. His bowling suited the longer form of the game in the Seniors and he bowled 45 overs of leggies and took 9 wickets for 208 at an average of 23.11.

A great first season in the Seniors cricket – a great start to what should be a fantastic career – well done Obie!
